Data sovereignty in use for the common European mobility data space - Proof-of-Concept

On Monday 1st of July 2024 from 14:00 until 16:00 CEST a webinar was held on Personal Data and Data Sovereignty applied to the European Mobility Data Space (EMDS). During this webinar the results of this Proof-of-Concept (PoC) activity developed by SEMIC and DG-MOVE demonstrated how reliable, secure data exchange transformed by making use of the Solid Protocol. 

In the development of the common European Mobility Data Space (EMDS) framework, there has been a rising interest in managing Personal Mobility Data in compliance with the EC legal framework. The vision established for the Proof of Concept (PoC) focuses on creating a Data Sovereignty and Trust building block. This component allows each EMDS participant to access personal data while adhering to current legislation (e.g. GDPR, the Data Act, and the Data Governance Act).  

The design, spearheaded by DG-MOVE and executed by SEMIC, features the solution’s portability to other Data Spaces, sustainability in transitioning Data Sovereignty and Trust from centralized to decentralized systems, and versatility by designing it based on IDSA-RAM roles. These properties ensure the PoC's outcomes can be integrated within EMDS, and reused by a broader Data Space community. This ensures a revolutionary approach to data sharing between Data Spaces.  

To facilitate adoption, the first version of the Data Sovereignty and Trust building block is released as an open-source Software Development Kit (SDK) for integration into web development projects that manage personal (Mobility) Data developed by any Service Provider. The SDK includes features for accessing personal data via the SOLID protocol, aligning with the stipulated regulatory framework. 

During this webinar, all essential aspects of the PoC were presented. The context, purpose and need for a solution was outlined. Next, the role of the Solid Protocol and focus on the SDK was outlined. Afterwards two use cases were demonstrated by a static demo, achieving: 

  • Personalised multimodal commuting recommendations based on their personal data. 
  • Enhanced service offering from mobility operators based on commuters’ personal data. 

Afterwards, a recap of the PoC process was shown before heading over to the use of the SDK. Lastly, a Q&A was held to answer to all remarks or questions you might have.
