European Green Digital Coalition Unveils Methodologies to Assess Climate Impact of Digital Solutions

Green Digital Coalition Unveils Climate Impact Assessment Methods

Published on: 05/07/2024 News

Three years after its launch in March 2021, the European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) Secretariat, led by DIGITAL SME, has announced the launch of science-based methodologies and guidelines aimed at assessing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions enabled by ICT solutions. This milestone initiative, validated by an Independent Advisory Board and developed in collaboration with key industrial actors including SMEs from DIGITAL SME membership, empowers businesses to quantify their contributions to climate neutrality.

Key Developments:

  1. Science-Based Methodologies: The EGDC has introduced methodologies to evaluate the net environmental impact of digital solutions across sectors. These methods, including the Net Carbon Impact Assessment Methodology for ICT Solutions, enable stakeholders to measure both the positive contributions and direct footprints of ICT solutions in CO2e.
  2. Sector-Specific Applications: Sector-specific methodologies have been tailored for industries such as energy, construction, smart cities, agriculture, transport, and manufacturing. Real-life case studies have validated these methodologies, showcasing practical examples of ICT solutions' environmental impacts.
  3. Deployment Guidelines: The EGDC has also published Deployment Guidelines to aid sectors in deploying ICT solutions optimally, thereby enhancing their positive climate impact and mitigating negative consequences.

The release of these methodologies marks a significant step in advancing Europe’s dual transition towards climate neutrality and digital leadership. By offering consistent and comparable assessment methods, the EGDC aims to empower stakeholders worldwide—from SMEs to local authorities and financial institutions—to make informed decisions and drive the adoption of digital solutions that positively impact the climate.

Looking ahead, the EGDC plans to promote widespread adoption of these methodologies across the EU economy. This includes expanding support services for SMEs, fostering cross-sectoral dialogue, and encouraging collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of sustainable digital innovations.
